Background
Sabbatical Leave is a form of recognition by Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) for its academic staff who carry out professional work in the academic field. This recognition is intended to provide academic staff with opportunities to enhance their interpersonal capacity, benefiting their future career development and the advancement of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education at USU. This initiative aligns with various legal regulations, including Law No. 20 of 2003 on the National Education System, Law No. 14 of 2005 on Teachers and Lecturers, Law No. 12 of 2012 on Higher Education, Regulation of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 20 of 2017 on the Provision of Professional Allowances for Lecturers and Honorary Allowances for Professors, Regulation of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 51 of 2017 on Educator Certification for Lecturers, and Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 3 of 2020 on National Higher Education Standards. Sabbatical Leave plays a significant role in enhancing the quality of academic staff at USU. Therefore, improving academic quality is essential to boosting the productivity of professors, doctors, and lecturers through academic programs. Capacity-building efforts can be carried out through Training in writing scientific papers published in reputable international journals, Technical research skills applicable in community activities, laboratories, and training programs, Academic communication skills as speakers at various seminars, and Writing skills enhancement through training programs. This initiative enhances lecturers' capabilities and helps alleviate work-related stress. Upon returning from Sabbatical Leave, lecturers at USU are expected to have renewed energy and motivation, reflected in their improved personal and professional competencies. In line with this, since the 2017 fiscal year, the Directorate General of Science, Technology, and Higher Education Resources has provided funding for the Sabbatical Leave Program for lecturers holding functional positions as Professors, Associate Professors (Lektor Kepala), and Senior Lecturers (Lektor). This program is based on the idea that professors and doctoral-degree lecturers who have been engaged in routine academic tasks for an extended period should be allowed to update their knowledge, enhance their academic skills, develop leading research programs, conduct benchmarking, and establish partnerships (networking) based on equality principles. This can be achieved through short-term visits to world-class universities abroad under the Sabbatical Leave program.
