Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted an audience visit from Universitas Quality Berastagi on Monday (June 23, 2025) in the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building. The audience was led by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., and attended by the Manager of the same Directorate, Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., the Chair of USU Research Institute, Prof. Dr. Robert Sibarani, M.S, Prof. Tulus Vor, Dipl. Math., M.Si., Ph.D., and the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si. From Universitas Quality Berastagi, the Rector, Jainal Togatorop, S.Pd., M.Pd., along with his team, were present.

The meeting discussed plans for collaboration in various fields referring to the university's tridharma (three pillars of higher education). One proposed cooperation plan is a joint subscription to the scientific journal database Scopus. This offer was made by USU considering the high subscription costs, while the benefits are significant for improving the quality of publications and academic reputation.

“Through this collaboration, we can support each other to strengthen research capacity, including access to global scientific resources like Scopus,” said Prof. Himsar.

The Rector of Universitas Quality Berastagi, Jainal Togatorop, warmly welcomed the offer and expressed his interest in enhancing research and community service cooperation, with USU expected to serve as a mentoring institution. He also stated his institution’s readiness to draft and sign cooperation documents, such as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Cooperation Agreement (MoA).

Additionally, Universitas Quality Berastagi plans to conduct a follow-up visit to USU’s Faculty of Agriculture to discuss the Kosabangsa program and draft a relevant MoA. The meeting also addressed the need for a joint funding commitment (cost sharing) in implementing future collaborative programs to ensure optimal execution of the partnership.

“Usually, when we want to conduct joint research, we first determine the research scheme that can be implemented so that the desired output is clear,” explained Prof. Robert.

The meeting also discussed collaboration on patent utilization with USU’s Faculty of Agriculture and joint cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Business, which has a partnership with the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS). Additionally, USU’s library proposed collaboration on scientific writing training by referring to trusted sources.

With strong collaborative spirit from both parties, this partnership is expected to serve as a catalyst for enhancing the quality of higher education, particularly in research, publication, community service, and strengthening international networks among universities in North Sumatra.
