"Diplomats Go To Campus" at USU: Enhancing Students' Insights on Diplomacy

Universitas Sumatera Utara and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a Diplomats Go To Campus event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-United States diplomatic relations. The event was held on Friday (17/05/2024) and was attended by USU Rector, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., and USU Vice Rector III, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si. In addition, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) and the US Consulate were also present, namely Second Secretary of Directorate American Affairs I, Muhammad Benyamin Abiyoga, and Deputy Principal Officer US Consulate in Medan, Kristy Mordhorst.

Mahmud Arief Albar, S.S., the Head of the USU English Literature Study Program, acted as the moderator of this event. Muhammad Benyamin Abiyoga and Kristy Mordhorst, speakers in this event, gave public lectures in front of all participants, consisting of USU students, Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED), and UIN Sumatera Utara. Both presented material on a brief history of diplomacy in Indonesia, how to become a diplomat and general knowledge about the role of the American consulate and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The event also featured U.S. education and scholarship exhibition booths from AMINEF and USAID, which provided additional information and opportunities for students to learn more about study and scholarship opportunities in the United States.
The enthusiasm of the participants was very high, as seen from the active Q&A session. The students eagerly asked a variety of questions, showing their great interest in the topics discussed. The questions covered various aspects of diplomacy and international relations, which showed the students' high interest and curiosity regarding the role of diplomacy in maintaining relations between countries.
USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si, in his speech, appreciated the "Diplomats Go To Campus" initiative as a good effort to provide insight and practical knowledge to students. "This event is very useful in opening students' thinking horizons regarding the important role of diplomats and international relations. We hope this event can be held regularly," said Dr. Muryanto Amin.
Dr. Muhammad Benyamin Abiyoga also expressed his appreciation for the students' enthusiasm. "The high spirit and curiosity of the participants show that the young generation of Indonesia is ready to contribute to the field of diplomacy and international relations," he said.
Deputy Principal Officer Kristy Mordhorst added, "We are pleased to share our knowledge about the American consulate and our role in building bilateral relations with Indonesia. We look forward to continuing to work with Indonesian universities to support education and cross-cultural understanding."
The "Diplomats Go To Campus" event at USU is expected to inspire students to explore careers in diplomacy and international relations and increase their understanding of the important role diplomats play in maintaining global peace and stability.
