Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted a public lecture titled "Singapore and Indonesia: Neighbours by Geography, Partners by Choice" on Friday (August 2, 2024). The event, held in the Academic Senate Room on the 3rd floor of the USU Rectorate Building, featured Singapore's Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Kwok Fook Seng, as the keynote speaker.
In his opening remarks, USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., highlighted that USU had signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with universities in Singapore and one Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) involving partnerships with Singapore Health Services PTE LTD (SingHealth), the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Don Shudar International Workforce PTE LTD. "We hope this event will provide deeper insights into how Indonesia and Singapore can further strengthen their partnership," said Prof. Muryanto Amin.
For 57 years, Indonesia and Singapore have maintained strong diplomatic ties with significant educational collaborations. Many Indonesian students pursue higher education in Singapore, and there are numerous partnership programs between educational institutions in both countries. The public lecture also served as a platform for students to learn from Singapore's education and technological systems, which could be adapted in Indonesia, especially in addressing climate change challenges.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU, explained that USU had been actively involved in various international activities with Singaporean universities, particularly in the fields of healthcare, palm oil research, and student mobility programs, which have sent nearly 200 students to Singapore. "With the visit of Singapore's Ambassador, we hope to encourage more student exchanges between USU and universities in Singapore," expressed Prof. Himsar.
During his presentation, H.E. Kwok Fook Seng emphasized that USU students will benefit significantly from these collaborations. With the presence of medical laboratories at USU, students will have opportunities to learn and participate in research. He also stressed the importance of interpersonal connections that can be fostered through personal networks without waiting for government initiatives.
Through this public lecture, it is hoped that Indonesian students, as the nation's golden generation, can maintain and enhance strong ties with Singapore by fostering cooperation in other sectors, such as energy transition, healthcare collaboration, student and youth exchanges, and food security. As close partners in ASEAN, Indonesia and Singapore can continue to support each other.
