The extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reflects a shared commitment to continuing and strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions and local government, particularly in accelerating development in North Nias. During the discussion, it was highlighted that the region still faces several development challenges, including limited basic infrastructure such as electricity access and internet connectivity, as well as disparities between central and remote areas.

Despite these challenges, North Nias holds significant potential in sectors such as tourism, fisheries, and coconut plantations. These opportunities are expected to be optimized through research- and innovation-based approaches. Therefore, the continued collaboration will focus on education, healthcare, and research as key pillars in driving sustainable regional development.

Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, emphasized that the extension of this partnership is part of the university’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to regional development.

“USU has both a moral and academic responsibility to contribute to regional development, especially in areas that still face limitations. Through this extended collaboration, we hope to implement research- and innovation-based programs that support the improvement of human resources and the development of regional potential in North Nias,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Regent of North Nias, Amizaro Waruwu, underscored the importance of this collaboration in accelerating development in the region.

“We greatly appreciate the continuation of this partnership with Universitas Sumatera Utara. Support from USU in education, healthcare, and research is essential for addressing the development challenges we face. We hope this collaboration will bring tangible benefits to the community,” he said.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of developing long-term programs oriented toward real community impact, as well as the need for affirmative policy support from the central government to accelerate development in underdeveloped regions.

Through this extended MoU, USU is expected to continue contributing to human resource development, applied research advancement, and community empowerment in North Nias Regency. This collaboration represents a strategic step in delivering science-based solutions to support inclusive and sustainable regional development.
