Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed a delegation from Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Imam Bonjol Padang on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the EQUITY Meeting Room, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building. The visit aimed to study USU’s waste management system through its Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) as a model for implementing a green campus concept.
The meeting was led by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships (DIKG) at USU. Also in attendance were Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., Global Partnerships Manager; the Head of the Undergraduate Environmental Engineering Study Program; the Head of the USU Waste Management Team; and DIKG staff members.
In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Himsar Ambarita expressed appreciation for the visit from the UIN Imam Bonjol Padang delegation. “USU is always open to sharing practices and experiences in waste and environmental management. Although our TPST system is still under development, we are ready to support and assist UIN Imam Bonjol Padang in building its waste management model,” he stated.
The UIN Imam Bonjol Padang delegation explained that the visit was conducted to learn about the concept and implementation of integrated waste management at USU, both from technical and managerial perspectives. They expressed their intention to adopt systems that have been implemented at USU, including waste segregation, processing, and the utilization of both organic and inorganic waste.
During the discussion session, Zaid, Head of the USU Waste Management Team, presented the TPST management process, starting from waste collection and segregation to processing into value-added products. He also emphasized that TPST management focuses not only on reducing waste volume, but also on increasing environmental awareness among the academic community.
“The TPST at USU was developed not merely to comply with regulations, but out of the awareness that sustainability must begin within the campus environment. We continuously strive to educate students and lecturers to change consumption behavior and to treat waste as a resource,” Zaid explained.
Following the presentation, the UIN Imam Bonjol Padang delegation expressed interest in conducting a site visit to the USU TPST facility to gain a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of its management. The field visit is planned as part of a benchmarking activity and as a follow-up step in preparing the development plan for a TPST at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang.
