Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Penang, Malaysia, visited Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) on Monday (13/3) at the USU Rector's Conference Room. UiTM's visit to USU was to discuss cooperation with USU in the field of research.

UiTM was welcomed by the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si, Head of the USU Research Institute, Prof. Dr. Robert Sibarani, MS, Head of Research of the Faculty of Law of USU, Prof. Dr. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, S.H., M.H.I., and his staff. UiTM was represented by the dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Associate Prof. Azila Azmi, and Dr. Suria Sulaiman, Angayar Kanni Ramaiah, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azrul Abdullah and Norshamshina Mat Isa.

The collaboration plan is based on creating Halal Tourism in the Toba area. This plan has been planned by the mayor of North Sumatra, Edy Rahmayadi. However, Toba residents responded negatively to the plan because it was considered a threat to their economy.

USU and UiTM focus this cooperation not only on research but also on community service. This is due to social, economic, cultural, legal and tourism considerations in the Toba region. Later, the research results obtained from the collaborative research can be used as material to formulate strategic concepts in achieving the goal of declaring halal tourism in Toba.

In addition to research, another collaboration that will be carried out between UiTM and USU is inviting USU to participate in the UiTM Summer Course Program.
