Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the Regional Tax Office Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) SUMUT I renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday (17/07/2024). The event occurred in the Academic Senate Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Building, marking the continuation of the previous agreement that ended in April 2021. The MoU was signed by USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., and Head of Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I, Arridel Mindra.
Also attending the event was the Director of Internationalization and Global Partnership USU, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T.; Director of Educational Development USU, Ikhsan Siregar, S.T., M.T.; Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) USU, Hatta Ridho; Vice Dean I of the Vocational Faculty USU, M. Representatives from the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I also attended, including Lusi Yuliani, the Head of the Public Relations, Services, and Counseling Division (P2 PR), and Tengku Amiliza, the Head of the Counseling and Document Management Section.
In his remarks, Arridel Mindra expressed his hope that the USU Tax Centre, established on November 25, 2008 — the first tax center in North Sumatra and outside Java Island — would continue to serve as a strategic partner of the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I in the areas of tax education, socialization, and research. "We hope that the USU Tax Centre can play a role in fostering public compliance and awareness in fulfilling their tax obligations," he said.
USU Rector, Prof. Muryanto Amin, expressed his gratitude for the willingness of Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I to continue the collaboration that has been ongoing for 16 years. He hopes that the guidance and direction from the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I will continue to support the development and empowerment of the USU Tax Centre. "USU is ready to support and collaborate with the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I to increase public awareness and compliance in taxation through education, socialization, and research," said Muryanto.
Muryanto also hoped for support from the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I in allowing USU students to practice their tax knowledge directly before entering the workforce. "We hope that through this cooperation, students can intern at the DJP office to prepare their tax-related skills for the professional world. We also hope that some of them may eventually be recruited as non-permanent DJP employees — from volunteers to full-time staff," he added.
After the MoU signing, the event continued with a public lecture titled "Getting to Know Taxes Better", delivered by Arridel Mindra as part of the Regional Tax Office DJP SUMUT I's Tax Day activities on July 14, 2024. The lecture aimed at students as future taxpayers, encouraging them to understand the importance of taxes better. This lecture also encouraged students to become tax volunteers, helping educate the public on tax compliance.
