Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Asia Forest Institute (AFI) from South Korea on Monday (11/11/2024) at the USU Faculty of Forestry, Kwala Bekala. This cooperation aims to strengthen collaboration in various fields, including forest and mangrove ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, agroforestry, and efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The event was attended by lecturers and students of the USU Faculty of Forestry and representatives from AFI.
In her speech, Prof. Poppy emphasized the importance of this collaboration for research development and academic capacity building at USU. "This collaboration opens up vast opportunities for USU in terms of joint project development, research collaboration, and improving the quality of education in forestry and the environment," she said.
As part of the event, a public lecture was also held on forest conservation and climate adaptation strategies. Prof. Dr. Ho Sang Kang delivered the lecture, which provided insights into the latest technologies in sustainable forest management and best practices in ecosystem restoration.
The MoU and MoA regulate several points of cooperation, such as the development of joint projects in ecosystem restoration, technology transfer, capacity building through training, and the exchange of publications and scientific information. USU, through the Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Agriculture, submits project proposals and coordinates with international experts.
The Asia Forest Institute is committed to supporting training, providing information and technology related to forest science, and exploring collaborative projects in climate change mitigation and adaptation in North Sumatra. This cooperation is expected to last for five years and can be extended by agreement of both parties.
This activity shows USU's commitment to strengthening international networks and increasing academic contributions to preserve the environment and ecosystem sustainability.
