Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), together with the National Zakat Board (Baznas), resumed discussions on implementing previously planned social and humanitarian programs. The meeting took place on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) in the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Building, chaired by the Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Collaboration, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt

Also attending were the Manager of Global Partnerships, Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., and Head of Public Funds Verification, Rafika Suryani, S.Kom, M.H.

This audience followed up on previous coordination efforts, which were delayed due to changes in USU's leadership, particularly in the Finance Bureau. The partnership had not progressed after the retirement of the Finance Bureau Head, who had previously facilitated technical communication with Baznas. Acknowledging the importance of this program, both USU and Baznas reaffirmed their commitment to reviving the work plan and moving forward with its implementation.

Baznas presented five key programs to be implemented at USU: Da'wah, Education, Health, Humanitarian Aid, and Economic Empowerment. These programs have been technically prepared and await administrative approval and support from USU leadership.

Prof. Poppy menyampaikan bahwa USU sangat mendukung inisiatif ini dan berharap kerja sama dengan Prof. Poppy reiterated USU's strong support for the initiative, expressing hope that the partnership with Baznas would positively impact the university community and surrounding society. "We hope this synergy will ensure that zakat funds managed by Baznas are effectively utilized—especially to support underprivileged students and social programs on campus," said Prof. Poppy.

Baznas representatives attending the meeting included Musaddad Lubis (Executive), Muhammad Yunus (Director), Dedi Hartono (Division Head), and Gusnawan Hasibuan (Section Head). They emphasized the need for a Rector's Decree or circular to authorize and sustain the collaboration formally. Additionally, Baznas plans to prepare an implementation plan, technical guidelines, and an annual budget as a reference for program execution.

As an initial step, this plan will be socialized across all related units at USU, including faculty leadership, administrative offices, and student organizations. The partnership is expected to be a model for effective, empowerment-focused zakat management and social programming.
