The Vice-Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., welcomed the visit of Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf from the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, Pakistan, on Monday (28/07/2025). The meeting took place in the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Building, and was attended by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., as well as the Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D.
In her remarks, Prof. Poppy expressed her appreciation for Prof. Sammer’s presence at the USU campus as a representation of the scientific collaboration between USU and ICCBS, which has long been a key partner in research development and academic mobility at the international level.
USU presented its university profile video during the meeting to introduce the institution’s capabilities and achievements to the international guests. This was followed by a discussion between both parties, including an offer from Prof. Himsar to explore joint research schemes between USU and ICCBS researchers in the future.
The visit was part of the Workshop and Training Program organized by USU in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and ICCBS – University of Karachi. Prof. Sammer Yousuf was scheduled to deliver guest lectures at USU’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) and Faculty of Pharmacy on Tuesday (29/07/2025).
In addition, he was also slated to serve as the keynote trainer for a two-day laboratory training session, Wednesday–Thursday (30–31/07/2025), at the USU Integrated Laboratory. The training would cover practical sessions and scientific presentations on techniques for purifying bioactive compounds and testing the bioactivity of natural product extracts—topics closely aligned with the research focus at FMIPA and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Through this program, USU hopes that its collaboration with ICCBS will not only be limited to technical training but also develop into long-term cooperation through staff exchange programs, student exchanges, visiting lecturers, and joint scientific publications.
Prof. Sammer’s visit is expected to boost USU’s internationalization efforts and serve as a catalyst for enhancing the university’s research capacity, particularly in pharmacy, chemistry, and life sciences.
