Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) received a visit from Prof. Dr. Thierry Wirth, Research Director of the Department of Earth and Life Sciences from Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE), France, to discuss opportunities for international collaboration. The discussion took place on Tuesday (26/11/2024) at the Equity Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building 3rd Floor, opened by Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., Vice Rector III of USU.

The discussion was chaired by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, and was also attended by Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., Secretary of the USU Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships. Also present were leaders of related institutions from USU, such as Prof. Dr. Erman Munir, M.Sc., Head of the Institute for Scientific Writing Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights, and Prof. Dr. Dwi Suryanto, M.Sc., Head of the Institute for Curriculum and Learning Innovation.

During the discussion, Prof. Himsar Ambarita offered collaboration opportunities through international programs, such as summer courses and adjunct professors, which have been excellent programs at USU. "We are very open to involving Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in the summer course program, which is in demand by many international students. In addition, we welcome the opportunity for academics from France to contribute as adjunct professors at USU so that there is more exchange of knowledge and experience," said Prof. Himsar.

Prof. Dr. Thierry Wirth welcomed the offer and expressed his interest in participating in academic activities at USU. "I am very interested in the opportunity to be directly involved in teaching at USU. Teaching here will allow us to share knowledge and understand more about Indonesia's rich culture and education system," said Prof. Thierry.

As a first step, both parties agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a general scope of cooperation. This document will be the basis for other specific activities, which will later be outlined in a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).

This meeting followed the discussions at the Indonesia-France 2024 Joint Working Group (JWG), which emphasized both institutions' commitment to expanding cooperation in the academic and research fields. Through this collaboration, USU hopes to strengthen its international network and open more opportunities for students, lecturers, and researchers to engage in global academic activities.
