Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed a delegation from the Modern Institute of Architecture and Technology (IMAT) for a meeting to discuss potential academic and research collaborations on Wednesday (January 8, 2025). The session was held at the Equity Room, Rectorate Building, and opened by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T.
The meeting was attended by several key representatives from both institutions. USU's delegation included Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D (Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships), Fahmi, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), Ir. Nismah Panjaitan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D (Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Engineering), Dr. Wahyuni Zahrah, S.T., M.S. (Head of the Architecture Study Program), and Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si. (Manager of Global Partnerships). Meanwhile, IMAT was represented by its Rector, Roslilawati, S.Sn., M.I.Kom., accompanied by Vice Rector III, Denny Hartanto, and Chairini Aisyah, staff from the Visual Communication Design Program.
During the meeting, both parties agreed to explore several collaboration opportunities, including joint exhibitions in design studios, collaborative research in architecture and design, as well as partnerships between USU’s Architecture Program and IMAT’s Visual Communication Design Program.
Arif Nuryawan mentioned that the cooperation would begin with drafting a general Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide flexibility in collaborative efforts.
"We will design an MoU draft that covers general cooperation while adhering to the university’s tri dharma principles. This approach allows us to collaborate across various fields without limiting the potential for innovative developments," he explained.
Roslilawati, S.Sn., M.I.Kom., Rector of IMAT, expressed her appreciation for USU's warm reception, highlighting the strategic importance of this collaboration in fostering innovation in design.
"We are very enthusiastic about collaborating with USU, especially in design exhibitions and joint research. Through this synergy, we hope students and faculty from both institutions can exchange ideas and experiences," she said.
This collaboration aims to not only strengthen academic ties between USU and IMAT but also provide opportunities for students to participate in cross-institutional activities such as exhibitions, workshops, and joint research. Furthermore, the partnership is expected to expand research coverage in architecture and design while enhancing the competitiveness of both institutions at national and international levels.
Through this constructive discussion, both parties agreed to immediately draft a cooperation document encompassing the discussed aspects. With the initiation of this collaboration, USU and IMAT are optimistic about creating innovations relevant to societal needs and the evolving world of design.
