USU and Ministry of Trade Sign MoU and MoA, Minister of Trade Delivers Public Lecture on Indonesia’s Trade Policies

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted a working visit from the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Budi Santoso, M.Si., on Tuesday (December 17, 2024). The visit included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between USU and the Ministry of Trade, followed by a public lecture. The event was held at the USU Auditorium, attended by university officials, students, and representatives from the Ministry of Trade.
The event began with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Partnerships at USU. She highlighted that the collaboration encompasses education, research, and community service, aligning with the university’s tridharma principles. "The collaboration will cover education, research, community service, the implementation of the Independent Campus—Freedom to Learn program, entrepreneurship, MSME development, and other mutually agreed areas. We hope this partnership will bring great benefits not only to both institutions but also to society, the nation, and the country," she said.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., on behalf of USU, and Dr. Budi Santoso, M.Si., representing the Ministry of Trade. Subsequently, the MoA signing was carried out by the Dean of the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Prof. Dr. Isfenti Sadalia, S.E., M.E., and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum. The MoA was also signed by Dr. Rusmin Amin, M.Si., Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order.
Following the signing ceremony, Dr. Budi Santoso delivered a public lecture titled “Indonesia's Trade Policies,” which was highly relevant given the current global context. He emphasized the strategic role of the trade sector as a driver of the national economy, a tool for international diplomacy, and a means to alleviate poverty. He encouraged students to understand national strategic issues to become competent leaders with global competitiveness.
"In today’s global context, Indonesia's trade policies are not only focused on increasing exports and stabilizing imports but also on creating an inclusive and sustainable trade ecosystem. We continue to strengthen Indonesia's role on the international stage through strategic trade diplomacy while supporting MSMEs to compete in the global market," Dr. Budi Santoso explained.
The lecture became even more engaging when the Minister invited students to answer questions about trade policies. Those who successfully answered received exciting prizes, sparking enthusiasm among participants.
The event was also attended by Dr. Ir. Luhut Sihombing, M.P., Vice Rector for Asset and Business Management; Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked(OG), Sp.O.G, Subsp.F.E.R, USU Secretary; Moga Simatupang, S.Sos, Director General of Domestic Trade; Sri Astuti, S.Si., M.SE, Director of Metrology; and Mardiana Listyowati, S.H., M.SE, Director General of National Export Development, along with other key officials from USU and the Ministry of Trade.
This event is expected to mark the beginning of a strategic collaboration between USU and the Ministry of Trade, encompassing various programs that will provide tangible benefits for students, faculty, and the wider community. Through this partnership, USU reaffirms its commitment to supporting quality education and building synergies with national institutions to achieve sustainable educational goals.
