Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed the visit of the University of Twente from the Netherlands in an audience that took place on Friday (11/15/2024) at the Equity Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building. Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., Director of the USU Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, chaired the meeting, which was attended by representatives from both universities to discuss opportunities for cooperation in various fields.

One of the main topics discussed in this audience was the University of Twente's cooperation plan to offer scholarships for PhD programs. Although the Dutch government is still awaiting further information on this plan, USU welcomes this initiative as a step to expand further education opportunities for lecturers and researchers.

The audience also covered potential cooperation in joint research with funding from The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Funding from NWO is expected to support collaborative research projects that will benefit USU and the University of Twente in producing quality publications and scientific contributions at the international level. In addition, USU, which was also attended by Dr.Anita Zaitunah, Dr.Samsuri, Dr.Arif Nuryawan, and Prof. Agus Purwoko, offered to initiate a joint degree program between USU and the University of Twente.

The University of Twente, represented by Assoc. In this meeting, Prof. Thomas Groen and Lyande Eelderink, M.Sc., also offered mobility scholarship opportunities under the Erasmus+ program, which can support student and staff exchanges between the two universities. The program aims to enhance the international skills and experience of USU students through participation in lectures and academic activities in the Netherlands.

Other cooperation discussed included Capacity Building under Erasmus+. Until now, USU has never collaborated with universities in the Netherlands in this field, so this initiative opens new avenues for institutional capacity building and strengthening international academic networks.

Prof. Himsar Ambarita said that USU is committed to increasing international cooperation to expand educational and research development opportunities for students and lecturers. This audience is expected to be an important first step towards closer collaboration between USU and the University of Twente, opening up new opportunities for higher education and joint research in the future.
