USU and Washington State University Explore Opportunities for International Academic Collaboration

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted an audience with Washington State University (WSU), United States, on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), held in the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building. The meeting was chaired by USU's Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Collaboration, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt
Discussions centered around exploring potential international collaborations shortly. From USU, the audience was attended by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T.; the Directorate's Secretary, Dr. Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si.; and supporting staff from the same unit.
Representing WSU was Prof. Dr. Shyam S. Sablani from the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. He introduced an overview of WSU and conveyed strong enthusiasm to initiate a partnership with USU, particularly in research collaboration.
Potential areas of cooperation include student and staff exchange programs, research collaboration, and summer course initiatives. USU also extended an invitation for WSU to participate in USU's international summer courses by distributing program information, such as brochures or flyers, through WSU's internal communication platforms.
"We are very open to sharing information on USU's international programs with our students and staff at Washington State University. This will help generate interest and participation in global academic initiatives," said Prof. Shyam Sablani.
The discussion also touched on academic program standards and structures to ensure compatibility for future cooperation. Both institutions agreed to continue communicating to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a formal basis for the partnership.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, expressed optimism that the collaboration would proceed as planned. "We look forward to the follow-up of this discussion in the form of agreements that will open more opportunities for international collaboration, particularly in enhancing the quality of education and research at USU," he stated.
This initiative is expected to serve as a bridge toward a closer relationship between USU and WSU, reinforcing USU's position in the internationalization of higher education.
