Towards Campus Internationalization: Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) officially collaborated with one of the oldest campuses in Massachusetts, United States, which has an international reputation, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), which was established in 1865. The collaboration is focused on USU's plan to build an international standard Innovation Studio with WPI as a role model.

Prof. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si and his staff visited WPI and signed a cooperation agreement with the Rector of WPI, Winston Wole Soboyejo, regarding plans to build an innovation studio, student and staff exchange programs, collaborative research and innovation, to increase the grade and quality of graduates from both campuses. Prof. Muryanto explained that the main focus of the cooperation between USU and WPI is to build an innovation studio. This Innovation Studio will support student practical learning that combines theory and practice, for example, printing technology. WPI has experience building integrated innovation studios and is willing to assist USU.

Dr. Muryanto said he was impressed with WPI's laboratory facilities and innovation studio to support student practicum activities, where WPI fully implements project-based learning in its curriculum. He also hoped that USU could take valuable lessons from this visit, especially related to managing the university's internationalization, improving academic quality, achieving reputation, and, most importantly, getting support from WPI for research activities and the development of innovation studios at USU.

USU is working to achieve the 500th position in the QS World University Ranking (WUR) as part of the campus internationalization program. Through the Summer Course, Inbound/Outbound Students, Internationalization Mobility Staff (IMS), and Sabbatical Leave (SL) programs, USU also invited Worcester Polytechnic Institute to participate and collaborate in these internationalization programs. WPI Rector Winston Wole Soboyejo welcomed the arrival of the USU group at WPI, Massachusetts, United States. He is grateful for the cooperation between USU and WPI and hopes that this cooperation can help improve the quality and encourage the progress of USU and WPI in research, innovation, and improving human resources. Accompanied by WPI Vice Chancellor Mimi Sheller, the WPI Rector accompanied the USU Rector to visit facilities at WPI, such as the Laboratory, Student Center, Innovation Studio, and Conference Room.

USU, under the leadership of Prof. Muryanto Amin, has made significant progress in the internationalization program; from the ranking results of various international institutions in 2023, USU is ranked 1200-1400 QS WUR, 451 QS AUR, 1501 THE WUR, and at Schimago Rank Institution, USU is ranked 5th best university in Indonesia. In 2023, USU offers 25 Summer School programs for international students and lecturers. USU also opened an Inbound/Outbound student program, which last year received international students from Austria to study at the USU Master of Management Study Program for one semester. This year, USU will send 38 students to look for one semester at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Malaysia, ten students to the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) in Karachi, Pakistan, and four students to join the Campus Teaching program at the Indonesian School Bangkok.

In 2022, 7 lecturers joined the International Mobility Staff (IMS) program, and one lecturer joined the Sabbatical Leave (SL) program. This year, nine lecturers will join the IMS program, and there will also be a guest lecturer program that facilitates foreign lecturers to give lectures according to their fields. Cooperation with campuses with an international reputation needs to be maintained to improve USU's reputation as a world-class campus. Before WPI, USU had also collaborated with the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands, ranked 212th in QS WUR.
