Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed an official visit from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UniRazak), Malaysia, to explore academic collaboration on Thursday (June 19, 2025), at the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building. The meeting was directly welcomed by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships (DIKG) USU, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T.

The visit served as a means of fostering good relations and introducing both institutions, while also marking the beginning of opportunities for broader collaboration. The UniRazak delegation was led by Mohamed Fairuz bin Mohamed Noor, Chief Operating Officer, accompanied by Firdaus Fitri Zainal Abidin from SKC. Representing USU were Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., Secretary of DIKG; Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., Cooperation Manager; Mahatir Muhammad, S. Farm., M.Si., Apt., Manager of Educational Assessment and Development; and representatives from the Master of Management Study Program.

During the audience, UniRazak expressed its desire to establish a strategic collaboration with USU. Mohamed Fairuz stated that they are interested in learning from USU as one of the leading universities in Indonesia. “We hope to adopt some of USU’s approaches, especially in educational technology and academic program management,” he said. He also emphasized that UniRazak is exploring long-term partnerships with prominent institutions in ASEAN, with USU being one of the top priorities on their list.

Responding to this, Prof. Himsar Ambarita warmly welcomed the proposed collaboration initiative. “USU is very open to this academic partnership; there are many programs that can be collaborated on. We have also conducted numerous student and faculty exchanges with several prominent universities in Malaysia,” he stated.

Additionally, the discussion covered the USU Master of Management Study Program. The UniRazak delegation showed interest in understanding the education scheme and learning system implemented. The USU Master of Management admits various categories of students, including regular students, scholarship recipients, and participants from institutional cooperation schemes. The lectures are conducted in a hybrid format (online and offline) with flexible scheduling designed to accommodate the needs of professional students. Tuition fees or Single Tuition Fees (UKT) were also presented within a competitive range, with several options available depending on the student’s funding status.

As a follow-up to this meeting, UniRazak proposed strategic cooperation steps in several stages, starting with the preparation of a Letter of Intent (LoI) or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), program mapping, the formation of a joint working committee, implementation agreement (MoA), notification to the regulatory bodies of each institution, and initial implementation in the form of a pilot cohort before proceeding to the evaluation and continuous improvement stage..

With this discussion, it is hoped that the collaboration between USU and UniRazak can soon be realized in concrete forms, such as faculty and student exchange programs, joint curriculum development, as well as research and innovation collaboration in the fields of technology and management.
