USU Explores International Cooperation with Educational Institutions from Singapore

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held an audience with several leading educational institutions from Singapore on Friday (11/10/2024) at the Equity Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building. The Consul General of the Republic of Singapore led the meeting in Medan. Edmund Chia was present, along with an educational delegation from Singapore. The delegation included representatives from Singapore Management University, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore University of Social Science, and Republic Polytechnic.
The audience was opened with a warm welcome from the USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., who expressed his appreciation for the presence of the Singapore delegation and their interest in collaborating with USU. “We are grateful for this opportunity and hope that the programs that have been discussed can be immediately realized for mutual benefit,” said Prof. Muryanto. The meeting focused on discussing opportunities for cooperation between USU and Singaporean educational institutions, especially related to student exchange programs, joint research, and the development of closer international relations in the future.
During the discussion, USU offered a two-week Summer Course program specifically designed for students from Singapore. The program aims to provide a cross-cultural academic experience on the USU campus. In addition, USU also expressed the intention to send nursing students to join an internship program at SingHealth NUS, a renowned health institution in Singapore. USU hopes that Singaporean educational institutions can provide accommodation and classes for students participating in the program.
Meanwhile, representatives from Singapore, such as Andrew Low from Singapore Management University and Katherina Tan from Temasek Polytechnic, explained their focus on preparing students for industry. Temasek Polytechnic, for example, offers a Global Studies Program that takes students out of their home region for educational experiences in other countries, including one-month internships in industry. Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) also emphasizes the importance of experiential learning, which allows students to gain practical skills through project-based programs.
The audience also discussed possible faculty exchanges and research collaborations in social sciences, technology, design, law and engineering. Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si (Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation) and Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, M.T (USU Director of Internationalization and Global Partnerships) will be responsible for overseeing the realization of the discussed cooperation.
USU Rector Prof. Muryanto also emphasized that USU is very concerned about increasing international cooperation, especially in the fields of food security, nutrition, and community development. The discussion ended with a commitment to strengthen bilateral relations between USU and Singaporean educational institutions and expand student exchange programs and joint research in the future.
