Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a public lecture titled “Mastering Academic Writing: From Basics to Excellence” on Monday, March 10, 2025, featuring two academics from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Associate Professor Vallery Combes and Associate Professor Scott Chadwick. The event, held in the Academic Senate Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Building, aimed to equip USU students and academics with quality academic writing skills.
The event began with welcoming remarks by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., who emphasized the importance of academic writing in the career development of academics and researchers. "Academic writing is not just a technical skill, but also a tool for disseminating ideas and innovations to the international world," said Prof. Himsar.
During the public lecture session, the event was moderated by Prof. Rikson Asman Fertilles Siburian, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D., who serves as the Internationalization Manager at USU.
Associate Professor Scott Chadwick, who serves as the Associate Head of the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences at UTS Faculty of Science, provided deep insights into the importance of structure in academic writing. “Good academic writing must have a clear structure, with logical arguments supported by strong evidence. Without a good structure, even the most brilliant ideas can lose their meaning,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Vallery Combes, Associate Head of the School of Life Sciences at UTS Faculty of Science, highlighted the importance of tailoring writing style to the target audience. “When writing for academic journals, we must understand who will be reading our work. The language used should match the readers' level of understanding and the standards of the targeted journal,” she stated.
Additionally, in this public lecture, both speakers discussed strategies for preparing engaging and competitive research proposals. They emphasized that good research should have clear questions, specific objectives, and appropriate methodology to secure funding and gain broader academic recognition.
By holding this public lecture, USU hopes to enhance the quality of scientific publications and research proposals produced by its academic community. This event is also part of USU's internationalization efforts to establish academic partnerships with renowned universities worldwide.
