Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Indonesia Youth Diplomacy (IYD), and the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia held a public lecture on Thursday (14/11/2024) with the theme “Japan-Indonesia Partnership” at the Academic Senate Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building. This activity aims to strengthen the relationship between USU and Japan and provide in-depth insight into the partnership relationship between Japan and Indonesia.
The event was opened with remarks by Arif Nuryawan, Secretary of the USU Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, and Tokanai Susumu, Consul General of Japan in Medan. The public lecture featured keynote speaker H.E. Masaki Yasushi, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia, who delivered a presentation on the diplomatic relations that have been established between Japan and Indonesia, as well as the challenges and opportunities that exist in strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
On this occasion, H.E. Masaki Yasushi expressed his views on important issues faced by Indonesia, including the gap between rural and urban areas. “One of the major challenges for Indonesia is to reduce the rights gap between rural and urban areas, as well as to prepare human resource development to face future demographic changes,” he explained.
Masaki Yasushi also highlighted the importance of Japan-Indonesia cooperation in security and defence. He said that given the dynamic security situation in the Asian region, collaboration between the two countries is crucial to maintaining regional stability.
Around 100 USU students attended the public lecture, which was enthusiastically followed by the question-and-answer session with the Japanese Ambassador. The students had the opportunity to ask H.E. Masaki Yasushi directly about issues related to bilateral relations between the two countries. This activity also allows students to broaden their horizons regarding international diplomacy, especially concerning relations between Indonesia and Japan.
This activity strengthens the relationship between the USU and the Japanese Embassy and becomes an important step in building international networks and increasing global understanding among USU students. In addition, this public lecture is part of the efforts of the Indonesia Youth Diplomacy (IYD) North Sumatra Chapter to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience in diplomacy for the younger generation.
By organizing this public lecture, USU hopes to continue to increase international collaboration and contribute to the development of global education, especially in the relationship between Indonesia and Japan.
