Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed representatives from PT. Saraswanti Indo Genetech (SIG) to discuss potential collaborations in research, laboratory management, and teaching on Monday (January 21, 2025). The meeting was held in the Equity Room, 3rd Floor of the Rectorate Building, and led by USU Vice Rector III, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si.
The event was attended by key USU officials, including the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Medicine, Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Global Partnership Manager, and the Head of Services and Promotion Division of the Integrated Research Laboratory, along with supporting staff. PT. Saraswanti Indo Genetech was represented by Andi Fazrin Achmad and Yusuf Dominggo Manurung.
During the discussion, several strategic collaboration points were explored. USU proposed that SIG provide access to advanced laboratory equipment for the university's academic community, including the possibility of placing some SIG laboratory instruments at USU. This initiative would reduce the need for researchers to travel to SIG's central laboratory for sample testing.
Additionally, SIG proposed joint activities such as workshops and seminars involving academics, practitioners, and other stakeholders.
"We plan to hold a collaborative event in August. This activity can serve as a forum for academics, practitioners, and institutions like BPOM to share knowledge, including best practices for using laboratory equipment," said Andi Fazrin.
The collaboration may also extend to teaching development through a guest lecture program, where SIG staff could contribute as guest lecturers at USU, providing students with practical insights and experience in laboratory technology.
Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., expressed her support for the proposed initiatives.
"We strongly support collaborations that integrate research, teaching, and joint activities. With direct access to SIG's laboratory facilities, our academics will find it easier to conduct research," she stated.
As a first step, both parties agreed to prepare draft documents for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to detail the partnership. These documents will serve as the foundation for implementing the discussed programs.
Through this synergy, USU and PT. Saraswanti Indo Genetech are optimistic about strengthening the ecosystem for impactful research and education in higher education, contributing significantly to improving the quality and quantity of research conducted by lecturers and students.
