Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has taken concrete steps to foster an environmentally friendly campus through the Socialization of the Waste Management Program. The event, held on Monday (December 16, 2024) at the Digital Learning Center Building (DLCB), 8th Floor, aims to support effective and sustainable domestic waste processing toward becoming a Zero Waste Campus.

The program involved the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), and the Rectorate Bureau as pilot locations for implementing an integrated waste management system. The event began at 10:50 AM, attended by representatives from the involved faculties, lecturers, staff, students, and cleaning personnel, who play a vital role in the success of the program.

Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., USU Vice Rector III, opened the event by highlighting the importance of collective campus involvement in ensuring the success of the program. She emphasized that proper waste management not only benefits the environment but also adds value when managed effectively.

"The key to successful waste management lies in awareness. Waste is not merely trash but something that can be reused if properly managed. Collaboration is the main strength, and the success of this program requires synergy from all campus elements—students, lecturers, staff, and the surrounding community. Students, as agents of change, have a strategic role in bringing real change to the waste management system at USU," stated Prof. Poppy.

The event featured expert speakers on waste management, including Zaid Perdana Nasution, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., who provided an introduction to the importance of a waste management system at USU. Rahmi Utami, S.T., M.T., presented social intervention strategies to change campus members' behavior in sorting waste. Meanwhile, Ridhoi Meilona Purba, S.Psi., M.Si., explained the mechanisms for waste collection and transportation to support the Zero Waste program's implementation at the involved faculties.

The discussion was moderated by Dr.Eng. Ir. Hafizhul Khair AM, S.T., M.T., who offered technical and strategic guidance for the pilot faculties. This program was initiated by the Research Assignment Team for System Design and Derivative Product Research, as well as Commercialization Potential from USU's Domestic Waste Processing.

Through this socialization effort, USU aims to establish an effective waste management system, reduce environmental impact, and create value from generated waste. This initiative underscores USU's commitment as a higher education institution supporting environmental sustainability and actively contributing to positive change in society.
