USU Receives Visit from Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar for Benchmarking International Rankings

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) received a visit from Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar on Monday (21/10/2024) at the Equity Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building, in the context of benchmarking activities related to international rankings. The visit was welcomed by the Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation of USU, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si.
Also present at the meeting were several USU leaders, including Ikhsan Siregar, ST, M.Eng, Director of the Directorate of Educational Development; Emerson Pascawira Sinulingga, ST, M.Sc, Ph.D, Director of the Directorate of Digitalization and System Integration; and Prof. Rikson Asman Fertiles Siburian, M.Sc, Ph.D, Internationalization Manager. Furthermore, delegates from Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar who attended included Dr. Ir. Abd. Rakhim Nanda, MT, IPU as the Rector, Dr. Burhanuddin, M.Si (Vice Rector I), Prof. Dr. H. Andi Sukri Syamsuri, M.Hum (Vice Rector II), Dr. Kaheruddin, S.Pd., M.Pd (Head of BAPEPAN-MTI), and several other representatives.
On this occasion, Prof. Poppy delivered her remarks by emphasizing the importance of collaboration in improving academic reputation at the international level. "USU is very open to sharing experiences related to international ranking strategies. We believe collaboration like this will strengthen our academic position together," Prof. Poppy said.
The meeting discussed the strategies implemented by USU to boost international rankings, including using TALENTA as the main foundation. Emerson Pascawira Sinulingga, ST., M.Sc., Ph.D., as Director of the USU Directorate of Digitalization and System Integration, explained that the TALENTA strategy focuses on improving the quality of human resources, research, and innovation, supported by the STAR value system, to achieve the target rankings in THE Impact Rankings and QS World University Rankings.
The material presented also explained USU's flagship programs, such as guest lectures, webinars with the world's top scientists, and international student and lecturer exchanges through the EQUITY program designed to strengthen USU's global reputation. "One of our main focuses is to increase global engagement by involving international guest lecturers and research cooperation with international partners," Prof. Rikson Siburian explained in his presentation.
The Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, Dr. Abd. Rakhim Nanda, expressed his admiration for USU's strategy for improving international rankings and hoped that this visit could provide new insights for his institution. "We want to learn from USU, especially regarding international ranking strategies that have been implemented successfully. This activity is very beneficial for our academic development," he said.
Mr. Emerson Pascawira added that USU can increase the number of research and publications by "establishing many research collaborations with overseas partners. In addition, we provide incentives to academicians who conduct research with publications included in at least Q3 journals." This encourages USU lecturers to innovate in research and produce internationally recognized scientific works.
Mr. Ikhsan Siregar continued, "USU also actively holds international conferences in collaboration with reputable publishers such as IOP Publishing. By collaborating with major Scopus-indexed publishers, we can increase the exposure and impact of our research in the international academic world."
At the end of the discussion, Dr. Burhanuddin, M.Si, Vice Rector I of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, expressed his gratitude for USU's welcome and exposure. "We are very impressed with USU's warm welcome and openness in explaining the strategies that USU has implemented," he said.
