Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has further expanded its international cooperation network by signing an Implementation Arrangement (IA) with the Water Industry Research Alliance of Korea (WIRA) and Korea University Sejong Campus. The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday (August 13, 2024), in the Academic Senate Hall of the USU Rectorate Building.

The IA was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at USU, Prof. Dr. Ir. Fahmi, S.T., M.Sc., IPM., and Mr. Gi Teak Park, a representative from WIRA. A separate cooperation agreement was also signed between USU and Korea University Sejong Campus, represented by Prof. Dr. Sung Woo Bae.

In his remarks, Prof. Fahmi emphasized that this collaboration aims to strengthen academic ties between USU and its two South Korean partners and drive innovation in environmental engineering with positive societal impacts. “This partnership provides significant opportunities for students and researchers to collaborate on projects that can lead to transformative changes in water resource management and environmental sustainability,” he said.

“We are delighted with this collaboration and hope it will foster stronger academic relations and cultural exchanges between Indonesia and South Korea, allowing students from both universities to learn and grow together,” stated Prof. Dr. Sung Woo Bae

Following the signing, a group photo session symbolized the strengthening of the partnership. On this occasion, USU presented traditional ulos fabric caps to students from Korea University Sejong Campus as a gesture of respect and friendship.

The event continued with a discussion session led by the Head of the Environmental Engineering Program at USU, Zaid Perdana Nasution, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. During the discussion, Zaid facilitated introductions between students from USU and Korea University Sejong Campus, encouraging them to engage and interact with each other. This session
was the starting point for closer collaboration between students from both universities, particularly in research and technological innovation in environmental fields.

“This meeting is a golden opportunity for USU students and those from Korea University Sejong Campus to exchange insights and build international connections that will benefit their futures,” Zaid remarked.

The partnership is expected to create a strong synergy in sustainable environmental management while strengthening academic and research ties between Indonesia and South Korea.
