The Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Prof. Dr. apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., welcomed two international academics from the University of Helsinki and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Building

This visit followed the Workshop and Sharing Session "Strategies for Accessing European Union Funds for Globally Competitive Research" held the previous day. The two speakers were Keni Vidilaseris, Ph.D., an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Margaretta Christita, Ph.D., a researcher at BRIN. Both attended to strengthen the potential for international networking and share global research experiences with the USU academic community.

Also present at the meeting were the Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships (DIKG) USU, Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D.; Global Partnership Manager, Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si.; and a Faculty of Forestry USU lecturer, Prof. Dr. Apri Heri Iswanto, S.Hut., M.Si.

In her remarks, Prof. Poppy expressed appreciation for the two speakers' contributions and participation in the previous activity and opened space for further dialogue on potential international research collaborations.

"We are very grateful for your willingness to share valuable insights with our participants, especially regarding access to EU research funding and the international collaboration opportunities available to the USU academic community," she said.

As part of introducing the institution, USU presented its profile video to provide international partners with a comprehensive overview of its academic strengths and research potential. The discussion also covered EU research funding schemes and opportunities for joint research between USU and European partners.

The meeting was warm and discussed topics such as international research funding schemes, collaboration opportunities in life sciences, forestry, and biotechnology, and proposal submission mechanisms. Keni Vidilaseris also shared her impressions of USU's warm welcome and expressed her openness to exploring potential collaborations—whether through joint research, researcher exchanges, or joint funding proposal development.

USU hopes that this meeting will pave the way for long-term research partnerships that enhance the quality of scientific publications and contribute significantly to addressing global strategic issues through collaborative scientific approaches. This initiative forms part of USU's efforts to support research internationalization and strengthen its position as a world-class research-based university.
