The Vice Rector III of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held an audience with the USU Student Executive Board (BEM USU) on Tuesday (11/02/2025) at the Equity Room, USU Rectorate Building. The meeting aimed to strengthen the relationship between students and the university administration while discussing collaboration plans for student talent and achievement development.
The discussion was led by USU Vice Rector III, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., along with Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, M.T., Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU. They warmly welcomed the BEM USU members who expressed their interest in contributing to supporting university programs.
The meeting was attended by BEM USU President Muzammil Ihsan, Coordinating Minister for Community Service Agung Darmansyah, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and several other members who took part in the discussion.
During the session, BEM USU proposed several initiatives to collaborate with the university in various aspects that would benefit students and contribute to USU’s progress. One of the key proposals was to establish a student cooperative as a platform for fostering student innovation and creativity.
This cooperative is intended to sell various USU-branded merchandise, such as pins, keychains, scarves, and other souvenirs featuring the USU logo. The initiative aims to cater to the needs of international students joining inbound programs and summer courses, as well as visiting foreign lecturers involved in academic activities at USU, who often look for such products but currently cannot find them on campus.
In response, Prof. Poppy suggested that BEM USU further coordinate with the USU Research and Innovation Development Agency (BPRI) to support the cooperative’s establishment. She also emphasized the importance of student involvement in Community Service Programs (PKM).
"The program where you can contribute the most is PKM," she stated.
Prof. Himsar also emphasized the importance of student participation in international competitions and academic achievement programs.
"We also need your help in identifying talented students who can compete in various competitions. In the past, we struggled to find students to represent USU in the SDG Ambassador event in Bangkok, so we had to conduct our own selection process," he explained.
Additionally, he stressed the need to identify students with special academic and non-academic skills so they can receive support to participate in national and international competitions.
"We want more students to represent USU in various competitions. Therefore, we hope BEM USU can help identify talented students who can be supported in these initiatives," he added.
BEM USU also expressed their willingness to assist the university administration in disseminating information about academic programs and scholarships to students. They hope that this collaboration will run smoothly and bring benefits to all USU students.
Through this audience, BEM USU and the university administration aim to create stronger synergy in supporting student development. It is hoped that this collaboration will enhance USU students’ participation in national and international competitions while fostering a more progressive and innovative academic ecosystem. Additionally, improved communication between students and the university administration will accelerate the implementation of programs aimed at enhancing students' academic and professional skills.
