The workshop, which was held on Thursday (06/06/2024), aimed to improve participants' academic skills in English. Dr. Philomena Dol delivered materials on the structure of academic essays, the use of formal language, and important tools in academic writing.
The workshop started with a starter exercise to practice the participants' grammar skills. Dr. Dol provided sample essays that the participants had to read to understand the structure of the paragraphs and the essay as a whole. Some main topics covered were paragraph and essay structure, types of academic writing, use of linking devices, strategies to avoid plagiarism, and techniques to write clear and effective sentences.
The workshop sessions were also complemented by various practical exercises, such as identifying paragraph structures in essays, using appropriate linking devices, and rewriting formal texts into more informal language for easier understanding.
The participants, including master's and doctoral students and USU lecturers, showed high enthusiasm during the workshop. They actively participated in group discussions and writing exercises and interacted directly with Dr. Dol for valuable feedback and advice on academic writing.
"This workshop is very useful for those of us who are pursuing advanced studies. We understand better how to write a good and correct essay and how to avoid plagiarism," said one of the participants.
This workshop is part of Universitas Sumatera Utara's efforts to continuously improve the quality of education and broaden the academic horizons of students and lecturers. By bringing in experts from Leiden University, USU hopes to provide a different learning experience and enrich participants' knowledge of academic writing.
Dr. Philomena Dol expressed her appreciation for the participants' active participation and learning spirit and hoped that the knowledge they had shared could be useful in their future studies and academic careers.
