Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held the Joint Conference 2025 on Thursday (September 11, 2025) at the Academic Senate Hall, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building. The event featured Associate Professor Yoshihiko Oishi from the Muroran Institute of Technology (MuIT), Japan, as the keynote speaker.

The conference was officially opened by the Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., and attended by over 120 students. The main goal of the Joint Conference 2025 was to provide students with insights from experts in their respective fields.

During his presentation, Oishi discussed the potential for collaborative research on renewable energy, machine efficiency, and environmentally friendly technologies. He highlighted that Indonesia and Japan share significant opportunities to jointly develop green energy technologies.

The conference also explored applied research with industrial impacts, including topics such as the air lubrication system technology for reducing water resistance in ships—an innovation that enhances energy efficiency and minimizes emissions. Additionally, the event emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder research collaborations involving BRIN, Universitas Riau, and the Palm Oil Research Center (PPKS).

The event proceeded interactively with a question-and-answer session between participants and the speaker, discussing issues related to international research funding strategies, reputable journal publications, and the utilization of research outcomes to support sustainability goals.

Through the Joint Conference, USU also arranged a meeting between Oishi and USU’s Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si. The meeting, held at the Equity Meeting Room, was used to further explore potential areas of collaboration between USU and MuIT.

Oishi introduced several joint research funding opportunities through programs under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). These funding schemes also offer fellowship and exchange programs that can support USU lecturers and students in conducting collaborative research in Japan.

“This opportunity enables us to participate in frontier research, ranging from clean energy and biotechnology to marine technology. We aim to build a stronger research bridge between Japan and Indonesia,” said Yoshihiko Oishi.

In addition to funding opportunities, the presentation session also showcased the outcomes of joint research between USU and MuIT during 2023–2025. The collaboration, led by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, M.T. (USU) and the MuIT team, resulted in internationally recognized publications, including papers in the Journal of the Energy Institute (Q1, IF 5.6) and Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effects (Q2, IF 2.1). Their research topics covered biodiesel-biogas utilization, clean energy, and palm oil–based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Through the Joint Conference 2025, the collaboration between USU and MuIT is expected to generate innovations with real-world impact, contributing to the advancement of science, technology, and sustainable development in both Indonesia and Japan.
