Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed the visit of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia for North Sumatera Province in the agenda of a Limited Discussion on the draft law on climate change management. The event took place on Tuesday (05/11/2024) in the Equity Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building 3rd Floor, and was chaired by Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., as Manager of the USU Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships.

Several USU academics attended the discussion, including Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si, Prof. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., Ph.D, Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D, and Yusrin, S.H., M.Hum. This meeting aims to obtain input and suggestions from USU experts in drafting a bill that will support climate change management in Indonesia.

Dr. Badikineta Br. Sitepu, S.E., M.Si, a member of the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia for North Sumatera Province, attended this limited discussion with several officials of the Regional Representative Council Office of the Republic of Indonesia for North Sumatera Province, including Herdiana Yusak, Tri Feberiyani Br Bangun, and Zulkifli Alfansuri.

In this discussion, the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia of North Sumatra expressed its hope that USU can significantly contribute, especially in drafting academic papers related to climate change regulations. “We need comprehensive input from universities like USU in drafting laws that will have a major impact on environmental management,” said Dr. Badikineta Br. Sitepu, S.E., M.Si as Regional Representative Council of North Sumatera Province.

Prof. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., PhD, said that USU is ready to support the government in preparing academic papers related to climate change regulations. “USU is looking forward to new regulations or changes in regulations that will be issued by the government, especially at the regional level. We are ready to assist in preparing academic papers for important and urgent regulations.”

Both parties agreed that this cooperation would produce a practical and in-depth draft bill. In addition, a follow-up meeting will be scheduled to draft a law on climate change management jointly. This discussion is expected to make USU the dominant university in drafting this bill, but it remains open to input from other universities on the island of Sumatra.

This collaboration reflects the commitment of both parties to addressing climate change issues through a strong legal foundation. It is expected to have a positive impact on society and the environment throughout Indonesia.
