Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a meeting with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand at the Administrative Office Meeting Room, USU Rectorate Building 3rd Floor, on Monday (06/05/2024). The meeting aimed to discuss plans for cooperation in education, especially in the Double Degree program.
Vice Rector III of USU, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si, gave a speech and opened this meeting. "We hope that this meeting will become a foundation for cooperation in the double degree program so that it can design educational compatibility between USU and AIT."
One of the main focuses of the meeting was the discussion of the semester credit system. Dr. Erna Budhiarti Nababan, Head of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Study Program, explained, "We are proposing to add and change the value of semester credits from 12 credits to 18 credits at USU. This is by the Minister's new requirement that students complete 54 credits within 1.5 to 2 years."
In addition, there was a discussion about adjusting the lecture timeline between AIT and USU. USU is adjusting to determine suitable lecture times for both parties. This is important to ensure a suitable lecture schedule between USU and AIT.
The meeting also discussed the total program costs and payments for the Double Degree program from the AIT design. "The program's total cost is 855,600 baht, and AIT will pay 50% of the total cost. However, the estimated cost of living until completing the program is 505,450 baht," explained Dr. Chantri Polprasert, Adjunct Faculty in the ICT Department at AIT.
A special strategy is needed to find students and additional funding, given the high tuition fees compared to USU tuition fees. USU will seek additional assistance for lecture funds, such as from LPDP and other funding sources.
This meeting is the first step in an educational collaboration between USU and AIT. Both hope to continue discussing and formulating the next steps to implement this collaboration and advance education.
