Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted a prestigious event, Sumatranomics Goes to Campus, on Thursday (15/08/2024) as part of a series of Medan Digifest 2024 activities. The event, which took place at the Digital Learning Center Building (DLCB), 8th Floor of USU, raised the theme "The Role of Digital Economy in Strengthening Sumatra's Economic Sustainability" and was attended by various related parties.
The talk show was moderated by Drs. Coki Ahmad Syahwier, S.E., M.P., Vice Chairman of ISEI Medan Branch and senior lecturer at USU's Faculty of Economics and Business. The event presented two prominent speakers: Dr. Fithra Faisal Hastiadi, S.E., M.SE., M.A., a senior economist, and Darius Tirtosuharto, Ph.D., Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia North Sumatra Province.
In his presentation, Dr. Fithra Faisal Hastiadi emphasized the importance of digitalization as the main driver of economic growth in Sumatra. "Digital economy is no longer an option, but a necessity for Sumatra to be competitive and sustainable in this global era. Technological innovation will be key in overcoming various economic challenges, especially regional disparities," said Dr. Fithra Faisal.
Dr. Fithra also explained the concept of "Globotics" (Globalization and Robotics), which combines globalization with the development of robotic technology. He highlighted how technological advances like automation and artificial intelligence can be integrated with globalization to improve economic efficiency and productivity. "Sumatra must be ready for this 'Globotics' era by strengthening digital infrastructure and improving the local workforce's skills," he added.
Meanwhile, Darius Tirtosuharto highlighted Bank Indonesia's role in supporting financial inclusion through digitalization. "Bank Indonesia continues to encourage digital technology to expand financial access at all levels of society, especially in areas that have been difficult to reach. This is an important step to ensure everyone can participate in economic growth," said Darius Tirtosuharto.
Darius also presented data on Sumatra's economic growth, which shows a positive trend, especially after the push for digitalization in various sectors. "We have seen a significant increase in digital transactions in Sumatra, a positive indicator for the regional economy. However, the challenge ahead is to ensure that all levels of society can feel the benefits of this digital economy," he explained.
This event is not only a discussion forum for academics and economic practitioners. Still, it is also expected to provide new insights for students and other stakeholders in supporting the development of the digital economy in Sumatra. With more than 200 participants, Sumatranomics Goes to Campus is one of the main events to strengthen Sumatra's economic sustainability through digital innovation.
