Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), together with the Consulate General of Malaysia in Medan, held the "Celebration of the 57th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Day" as a moment to commemorate the long journey of cooperation and unity of Southeast Asian countries, on Wednesday, (14/08/2024).
The event was held at USU's Digital Learning Building Centre and attended by various honored guests, including the Regional Secretary of North Sumatra Province, Ir. Arief Sudarto Trinugroho, MT, who represented the Acting Governor of North Sumatra Dr. Drs. H. Agus Fatoni, M.Si., the Consul General of Malaysia in Medan, H. E. Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek, and the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si.
The 57th anniversary of ASEAN is an important milestone in the history of Southeast Asian countries. For more than half a century, ASEAN has proven its commitment to promoting peace, prosperity, and development in the region. USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin expressed his deep appreciation for the initiative of the Malaysian Consulate General in Medan to involve USU in this celebration.
"We are honored to participate in celebrating 57 years of ASEAN. As an educational institution, USU is committed to supporting collaboration and the development of science and technology to advance the ASEAN region," said Prof. Muryanto Amin.
In addition to the celebration, this event was also an important discussion forum, during which two panellists presented material relevant to the development of ASEAN.
The first panellist, H.E. Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek, Consul General of Malaysia in Medan, delivered a presentation highlighting the history of ASEAN's establishment and the development of this organization today. In his presentation, Shahril Nizam explained how ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967, by five founding countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Over time, ASEAN developed into a regional organization consisting of 10 member countries with the main objective of promoting cooperation in the political, economic, and cultural fields and maintaining stability and peace in the Southeast Asian region.
"ASEAN has grown rapidly since its establishment, with an increasingly strong focus on economic integration and broader regional cooperation," Shahril Nizam said. He also emphasized ASEAN's important role in facing global challenges, such as climate change, maritime security, and health crises, which require closer cooperation among member countries.
The second panellist, Dr Jelly Leviza, S.H., M.Hum., Head of the ASEAN Studies Center at USU, delivered a presentation entitled "ASEAN Existence, Cooperation, and Regional Agreements in the Context of the 57th Anniversary of ASEAN." Dr. Jelly explained how ASEAN has managed to maintain its existence as a significant regional organization through various regional cooperation and agreements.
In his presentation, Dr. Jelly highlighted the importance of cooperation among ASEAN member states in facing common challenges and how the agreed regional agreements have become a strong foundation for achieving ASEAN's common goals. "Cooperation in various fields, from economic to socio-cultural, has been the key to ASEAN's success in maintaining stability and prosperity in the region," Dr. Jelly explained.
USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., expressed his appreciation for this collaboration. "As an educational institution, USU always opens the door to cooperation that can advance the region, especially in the context of ASEAN. Activities like this enrich knowledge and strengthen the spirit of unity among ASEAN member countries," said Muryanto Amin.
He added, "Through active participation in this celebration, we hope to achieve the ideals of ASEAN's founders to create a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. May this collaboration continue to grow in the future."
The event provided a comprehensive insight into ASEAN's role in history and today and the challenges and opportunities facing the organization in the future. Both panellists' presentations gave participants a deeper understanding of ASEAN's importance to the region while inspiring the younger generation to continue supporting close regional cooperation.
