Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed a visit from the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenaker RI) to discuss potential collaboration in human resource development and synergy between higher education institutions and vocational training centers (BLK). The meeting, held on Thursday (December 12, 2024), at the Equity Room, USU Rectorate Building, was led by Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., USU Global Partnership Manager.

The session was also attended by Drs. Gustanto, M.Hum., Vice Dean of the Vocational Faculty at USU, along with staff from the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships. Representing Kemenaker RI were Harsya and Dody from the Ministry’s Cooperation Bureau.

During the discussion, Kemenaker RI conveyed the directives of the Minister of Manpower to expand collaboration with universities to enhance synergy between university graduates and BLK workforce needs. One of the Ministry's primary plans is to establish a Manpower Communication Forum involving universities, employers, and the Ministry. The forum, scheduled for next year, will feature panel discussions aimed at aligning workforce market demands with university curricula.

Kemenaker RI also proposed various collaboration opportunities for USU, including facilitating vocational certification through the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) for vocational students. Additionally, the Ministry suggested partnerships in training programs based on the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) framework to enhance USU students' competencies according to industry needs.

During the meeting, Drs. Gustanto explained that USU’s Vocational Faculty had already established a partnership with BLK Medan and expressed hopes for swift implementation of cooperation with Kemenaker through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). “We sincerely hope this MoU can be realized soon so that USU students can gain wider access to certifications and training programs from the Ministry,” he said.

Moreover, Kemenaker RI introduced the Workforce Polytechnic (Polteknaker) program, designed to collaborate directly with companies to prepare ready-to-work personnel. They cited Universitas Brawijaya as an existing partner and expressed hopes that USU would become the next strategic partner.

As a follow-up, Kemenaker RI requested USU to appoint a liaison officer as the primary contact for this collaboration. The plan is expected to be realized soon, fostering a strong synergy between education and workforce sectors to provide tangible benefits for USU students and graduates.
