Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Medan, organized a Visiting Lecture Series titled “Women Leadership and Resilience” on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at the Video Conference Room, 4th Floor, Digital Learning Center Building, USU. This academic initiative is a joint program between the Master of Public Administration Department, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) USU, and the Government of India through the Indian Consulate General in Medan.

The event, which began at 10:30 AM (WIB), was attended by students, lecturers, and invited guests from various faculties. The program commenced with the singing of national anthems, followed by opening remarks delivered by the Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships (DIKG) USU, Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D.

In his remarks, Arif emphasized that the topic of women’s leadership is highly relevant in shaping the character and capacity of USU students. He also expressed his appreciation for the support of the Indian Consulate General in facilitating cross-nation dialogue on women’s empowerment issues.

“Today, women play major roles in various sectors — from education and governance to the creative industry. Through this initiative, we aim to provide a learning platform that strengthens the confidence of young women at USU to lead and contribute to society,” said Arif.

Following the opening remarks, the Consul General of India in Medan, Mr. Ravi Shanker Goel, delivered the Inaugural Address, highlighting the strategic relations between Indonesia and India in education and women’s capacity development. “This collaboration serves as a forum for exchanging ideas between both nations. Women’s leadership is a foundation for building more inclusive and resilient communities,” he stated.

The program continued with an introduction by the organizing committee chair, Asima Yanty Siahaan, M.A., Ph.D., before the presentation sessions commenced.

The first speaker, Dwi Endah Purwanti, S.S., M.Si., Head of the Office of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection of North Sumatra, presented insights on the challenges and opportunities concerning women’s empowerment in the region, including the importance of gender-responsive policymaking.

The next session featured an international speaker, Dr. Priyadarshini Karve, a renewable energy and climate resilience expert from India, also serving as CEO of CLEAN and founder of Samuchit Enviro Tech. She discussed the global perspective on women’s roles in environmental innovation and sustainable development.

“Women’s resilience is not merely about endurance, but the ability to create sustainable solutions for their communities. Many significant changes in India have been driven by women at the grassroots level,” Dr. Karve explained, receiving an enthusiastic response from participants.

The discussion continued interactively during the question-and-answer session moderated by Dr. Marhaeni Munthe, M.Si., where participants raised points on women’s leadership, structural barriers, and opportunities for international research collaboration.
