Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Times Higher Education: Reputation and Rankings Session, which took place on Thursday (11/21/2024) at the Academic Senate Room, USU Rectorate Building. This activity was opened by Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, and was attended by deans and vice deans from all faculties at USU. Several work units related to the ranking, such as the Institute for Research, Community Service, and the Institute for Scientific Writing Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights, were also present at this event.

In her speech, Prof. Poppy conveyed the importance of this activity in accelerating the achievement of USU's internationalization vision. "The presence of Mr. Tom Arnott from Times Higher Education was invited specifically to provide strategic guidance on improving USU's global reputation and ranking. I hope this session can help us understand the concrete steps needed to achieve higher targets," said Prof. Poppy.

The discussion session was hosted by Prof. Rikson A. F. Siburian, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., USU Internationalization Manager, with the main speaker, Mr. Tom Arnott, Regional Subscriptions Director from Times Higher Education (THE). In his presentation, Mr Arnott highlighted that a university's global reputation could be improved with strategies based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators, as defined by THE Impact Rankings.

"Universitas Sumatera Utara "has a great opportunity to shine in THE Impact Rankings by capitalizing on strengths in SDGs indicators, particularly SDG 3 on health and well-being and SDG 4 on quality education," Mr. Arnott explained. He also added that success in these indicators can be achieved by publishing relevant research results, strengthening public health-based programs, and active involvement in inclusive education issues. "Focusing on the SDGs improves rankings and demonstrates the university's commitment to sustainability and social responsibility," he added.

Mr. Arnott also underlined the role of the THE Campus platform as a means to publicize the university's innovations and successes. Through this platform, USU academics can share best practices in areas such as internationalization, digitization of education, and contributions to global sustainability.

This activity provides momentum for USU to strengthen its strategy for improving its global ranking and international reputation. Through this FGD, USU is committed to continuously enhancing academic quality, expanding international networks, and positively impacting global higher education.
