Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held an audience with Willtec Co., Ltd. Japan on Wednesday, June 6, 2024. The meeting, which took place from 14.00 WIB until completion, took place in the Transformation Towards the Ultimate Meeting Room of the USU Rectorate and was chaired by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T, Director of the USU Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships (DIKG).
In his remarks, Prof. Himsar Ambarita warmly welcomed the delegation from Willtec and introduced himself and his colleagues from USU. He highlighted the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka (MBKM) program initiated by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, which could be the basis for cooperation with Willtec. “This program has great potential to be implemented with Willtec, but there needs to be a classification of teachers and the preparation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties before starting this program,” said Prof. Himsar.
Chikara Miyagi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Willtec Co., Ltd., explained the purpose of their visit to USU, which was to look for business opportunities in Indonesia and see the USU campus firsthand. “Willtec has established cooperation with several campuses in Indonesia, such as UNESA and ITS. We hope to establish cooperation with USU because we need labor from Indonesia to work in Japan,” said Chikara Miyagi.
Willtec has 6,000 employees divided into Manufacturing, Civil, and IT departments. They plan to implement a two-year training program consisting of 1.5 years of Japanese language courses and six months of training in their respective fields. “This training program aims to attract USU students interested in working in Japan. We will cover all the costs of this program, including departure fees and paperwork,” explained Chikara Miyagi.
The training program covers Electronics, IT, Architecture, and Robotics. Willtec will also organize recruitment in collaboration with USU to find interested students and provide recruitment space. “Japanese language classes are a compulsory part of the training, and students must reach the N2 level to be able to work in Japan. From our experience, only 80% of students usually complete the course, and 60% are interested in working in Japan,” he added.
The meeting was closed by Prof. Himsar Ambarita at 3 PM with an agreement to continue communication and further preparations regarding this program. “We hope this program can be implemented soon after the agreement between the two parties. This cooperation is very good for us and Willtec,” said Prof. Himsar.
