Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a public lecture with the theme "Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy and Indonesia" at the Digital Learning Centre Building on the 8th floor on Thursday (12/05/2024). The event was attended by students from various faculties at USU, with keynote speaker H.E. Jess Dutton, Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
The event began at 3.00 PM with Salwa Salsabila, S.I.Kom, opening the event as the Master of Ceremony. Furthermore, the Rector of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., warmly welcomed the participants and guests of honor. "We are proud to be able to organize this public lecture and hope to strengthen the relationship between Indonesia and Canada through dialogue and academic cooperation," said Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin.
After the speeches, the event continued with an exchange of tokens of appreciation and a group photo, strengthening the good relationship between the two countries. Then, H.E. Jess Dutton began his presentation by introducing Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy and its relevance to Indonesia.
In his presentation, H.E. Jess Dutton explained that Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy includes five main pillars, namely promoting peace, resilience and security; expanding trade, investment and supply chain resilience; investing and connecting people; building a sustainable and green future; and positioning Canada as an active and engaged partner in the Indo-Pacific.
"The rising influence of the Indo-Pacific region is a once-in-a-generation global shift and requires a generational response from Canada," said H.E. Jess Dutton. He also highlighted Canada's nearly $2.3 billion in new commitments for the first five years of the strategy.
H.E. Jess Dutton emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship between Canada and Indonesia, including economic cooperation, security, and energy transition. "Canada and Indonesia have a shared commitment to a rules-based international system and new security cooperation," he added.
In addition, the Canadian ambassador also outlined plans to support democracy in Myanmar and across Asia through local initiatives funded by Canada.
The Q&A session, which lasted from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM, was hosted by Shahnaz Alzamru as moderator. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions directly to the ambassador. The questions covered various topics, from scholarship opportunities to research collaboration between educational institutions in both countries.
This public lecture provided new insights for the participants and strengthened diplomatic and educational ties between Indonesia and Canada. USU continues to be committed to becoming a center of learning and international cooperation that contributes to nation-building.
