Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held an audience with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) on Tuesday (15/10/2024) to discuss the potential for cooperation between the two institutions. Several important representatives from the UUM side, including Assoc, attended the audience. Prof. Dr. Johan Afendi Ibrahim is the Dean of the School of Technology, Human and Environmental Management (STHEM), and Dr. Mua'zam bin Mohamad is the Deputy Dean for Academic and International Affairs, Assoc. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johan Afendi Ibrahim, the Dean of the School of Technology, Human and Environmental Management (STHEM), also delivered his speech and introduced their university profile. UUM has established cooperation with various institutions, one of which is Universitas Ciputra Surabaya, where there will be an exchange of academic staff between the two institutions shortly. UUM said that similar activities, namely staff exchange, could also be an opportunity for cooperation with USU. "We see great potential to conduct staff exchange activities with USU as it is already running with Ciputra, and this could expand academic collaboration in the future," said Johan.
USU also offers other programs that can strengthen the academic relationship between the two universities. One of these is the adjunct professor program, where lecturers or professors from UUM can come to USU to give lectures and share experiences with USU students. This activity can also open up opportunities for joint research between USU and UUM lecturers, which is expected to improve academic quality and produce significant research output.
One of the other discussion points related to financial administration mechanisms in international programs. UUM explained that they no longer apply the money transfer system in academic cooperation, while USU still requires the process for documentation and internal audit purposes. Both parties agreed to discuss this further to find the right solution.
At the end of the hearing, both institutions emphasized their commitment to expand cooperation in the future. "We hope this will be the beginning of closer collaboration between USU and UUM in various fields, including staff exchange, joint research, and other educational programs," said Arif Nuryawan. This audience is expected to open new opportunities for the international development of both universities.
