Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Zurich General Takaful Indonesia (Zurich Syariah) on Thursday (20/02/2025) at the Digital Learning Center Building (DLCB) USU. In addition to the MoU signing, the event featured a public lecture titled "Zurich Syariah Goes to Campus," which discussed digital transformation in Islamic insurance and its role in a competitive and sustainable Islamic economic ecosystem.

The event opened with remarks from the Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships at USU, Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., who expressed his hope that the collaboration would not stop at the MoU signing but would continue with various programs in education, research, and community service. "Hopefully, this MoU signing can be followed up with other collaborative activities, especially in the realm of the Tri Dharma of higher education, namely education, research, and community service," he said.

He also emphasized the importance of this public lecture in providing students with new insights into technological developments in the Islamic insurance industry. "I hope that through this public lecture, we can gain new insights, particularly regarding digital transformation and its role in advancing technology in Islamic insurance," he added.

Arif Nuryawan, representing USU, and Dian Wibowo, Director of Zurich Syariah, conducted the MoU signing. This agreement begins to build synergy between the academic and industrial worlds, particularly in developing research and education on Islamic economics and Sharia-based financial protection.

In her lecture, Dian Wibowo highlighted how digitalization has transformed the landscape of the Islamic insurance industry, including products such as vehicle, home, travel, personal accident, and weather index parametric insurance. Technological advancements have enabled Zurich Syariah to provide faster, more transparent services aligned with Islamic economic principles.

Satria Nugraha, Zurich Syariah's Business Head of Partnership, also shared that the company has prepared various sustainable programs for students. These programs include certified internships, management trainee programs, and entrepreneurship programs to equip students with financial and business skills rooted in Islamic economics.

Zurich Syariah also launched an entrepreneurship recruitment program designed to equip students with financial and business skills based on Islamic economics, enabling USU graduates to achieve better financial resilience. "We aim to create more opportunities for students to understand Islamic economic practices directly, helping them develop skills relevant to the industry," he said.

As a form of appreciation to the participants, Zurich Syariah provided all attendees with free personal accident insurance for one year. This insurance offers 24-hour protection with total benefits of up to IDR 1 billion, aiming to give students direct insight into the benefits of Islamic insurance protection.
