Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), through the Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Collaboration, Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si., convened a coordination meeting regarding the launch of the Priority Research Program of the Directorate General of Research, Technology, and Community Service (Ditjen Risbang) for Fiscal Year 2026. The meeting took place at the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor of the USU Rectorate Building, on Friday, 24 October 2025.
The meeting was attended by several institutional and administrative leaders, including the Head of the Institute for Community Service at USU, Prof. Dr. Tulus, Vor.Dipl.Math., M.Si., Ph.D.; the Head of the Research and Innovation Development Agency, Buchari, S.T., M.Kes., IPM; the Manager of Publications, Journals, and Conferences at the Institute for Scientific Writing Innovation and Intellectual Property, Sony Eka Nugraha, S.Farm., M.Si., Apt.; as well as the Vice Deans III from various faculties across USU.
During the session, Prof. Poppy stated that the launch of the 2026 Priority Research Program serves as an important opportunity for USU to enhance the quality and strategic direction of its research endeavors. She emphasized that universities must align their research agendas with national priorities while maintaining their respective scholarly strengths. “We must ensure that every research project at USU addresses national and global needs. Our focus is not solely on the number of proposals submitted but on the scientific robustness and substance they present,” she remarked.
Following the opening address, the meeting continued with a detailed presentation on the technical aspects of the program’s launch, including funding schemes, the scope of priority research fields, and the proposal submission mechanisms for Fiscal Year 2026. Participants then engaged in discussions on internal strategies required for USU’s preparedness. One of the key topics addressed was strengthening research supervision and enhancing alignment between research themes and the Ministry’s priority agenda.
Prof. Tulus, Head of the Community Service Institute, emphasized the need for stronger cross-unit coordination to ensure a shared understanding of national research directions among lecturers. He noted that quality improvement can be achieved through sustained mentoring efforts. “Supervision should be geared toward improving problem formulation and methodology, as these two elements fundamentally shape research direction and outcomes,” he explained.
USU was also urged to optimize its internal resources to support the success of this program. Furthermore, researchers should be provided with adequate space to deepen their expertise while being guided to produce impactful and relevant outcomes. The discussion proceeded constructively, with participants sharing ideas on monitoring mechanisms, publication strategies, and strengthening proposal readiness.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation by Prof. Poppy that USU must prioritize the quality of research outputs as part of efforts to reinforce the university’s institutional competitiveness. She called upon all related units to work collaboratively in supporting researchers’ readiness ahead of the 2026 program launch. “We want USU to establish a stronger research ecosystem. Quality must remain our central focus so that the outcomes of our research truly benefit society and contribute to the advancement of science,” she concluded.
