The research team from the World Class University (WCU) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), with the scheme "Scientific Cluster of Green Buildings to Realize Quality Urban Environment," visited Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia, on 11-12 May 2023.

Led by Hilma Tamiami Fachrudin, S.T., M.Sc, PhD, GP from the Department of Architecture, with members Ir. Rahmi Karolina, S.T., M.T., IPM. GP from the Department of Civil Engineering and Mohammad Dolok Lubis, S.T., M.Sc. from the USU Department of Architecture, conducted collaborative research with Prof. Dr. Ahmad Sanusi Hassan from the School of Housing, Building, and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

In addition to KPI (Key Performance Indicator) 3, "lecturers who have off-campus activities," this program also fulfils KPI 2, where students gain off-campus experience. For this reason, USU invited USU Master of Civil Engineering student Devi Fahreza, S.T., to leave for Penang on May 10, 2023.

The next day (May 11), the USU team conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with Prof. Dr. Ahmad Sanusi Hassan regarding green building in Malaysia. The USU team also had the opportunity to meet with the dean of the School of Housing, Building, and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia, to discuss cooperation between the two campuses through MoA and AI.

The cooperation that will be carried out includes joint research, publications, and conferences. During the meeting, Prof. Ahmad Sanusi invited the USU research team to hold a conference in 2024 in Bangkok with other universities from Oman and Thailand. Prof. Ahmad Sanusi also conducted an FGD with Mr. Baylon Tham from the Malaysia Green Building Council. During the meeting, Prof. Sanusi and Mr Baylon explained the measurement of green buildings according to the rating tools of the Malaysia Green Building Council with examples of green buildings in Malaysia and Pulau Pinang.

On Friday, May 12, the USU research team conducted field visits to green buildings in Penang. The first building visited was the Paramit Building in Bukit Minyak, Penang, Malaysia. The Paramit Building Manager, Loh Chee Keong, welcomed the team there. After the Paramit Building, the team also visited the Night Shelter for the Homeless built by "Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang" (MBPP), accompanied by Mr Loh Chee Keong. This building was built for the homeless in Pulau Pinang. This building was built with zero energy, water, and waste. Where natural lighting and ventilation are maximized by using roosters in the building, grey water can be collected and reprocessed for watering plants, rainwater can be reused to flush toilets, and waste in the building can be collected and reprocessed for composting.

Hilma said through this FGD and Site Visit, USU hopes that the Building Science Cluster for Realizing Urban Environmental Quality can become a basis for increasing awareness and concern for the importance of green buildings in Medan and Indonesia and supporting Indonesia's commitment to achieve Net Zero Emissions of 43% by 2030.
